Our district is implementing PBIS this year. We are working on bringing down the number of suspensions (in school and out of school). While we are following the PBIS matrix of discipline to determine behaviors that are constituted as an office referral and what can be handled in the classroom, we are trying to find alternatives to suspension that work for students. Our main concern is the students' learning. We do not want to suspend because they are losing learning opportunities, however, we do not want the remaining students in the classroom to lose learning opportunities because teachers and administrators are "baby sitting" students with intense behaviors. Suggestions for alternatives to suspension? And how to manage intense/extreme behaviors on campus where the students are still learning?
